Jenny, a medical assistant working in Dr. Cory's orthopedic practice, has been asked to assist Mr. Ivy from the wheelchair onto the examination table. Mr. Ivy, who is 70 years old, is weakened on the left side of his body from a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). He weighs 200 pounds and is reluctant to provide much help to Jenny when she has to transfer him from the wheelchair to the examination table.

How can Jenny get Mr. Ivy to help her assist him?

Describe the body mechanics that Jenny should use to assist Mr. Ivy.

What patient education does Mr. Ivy need?

What documentation should Jenny provide on Mr. Ivy's record?

Final answer:

Jenny should use proper body mechanics to assist Mr. Ivy from the wheelchair to the examination table, educate him on safe transfer techniques and engage his participation, and ensure accurate documentation is provided on his medical records.

Step-by-step explanation:

To encourage Mr. Ivy to assist Jenny in transferring him from the wheelchair to the examination table, she can explain the process clearly to him, encourage him to use his right side (which is stronger), and guide him through the steps of the transfer. Jenny should use correct body mechanics by maintaining a wide base of support, keeping her back straight, bending at the knees and hips, and using her legs to lift rather than her back. She should also utilize a gait belt if available for better safety. She should encourage Mr. Ivy to push up using his stronger side, and communicate each step as they progress through the transfer.

Mr. Ivy needs patient education regarding safe transfer techniques to minimize the risk of falls and promote independence, the importance of participating in physical therapy if prescribed, and how to recognize signs of further stroke-related complications.

Jenny's documentation on Mr. Ivy's record should include the method of transfer used, the degree of patient assistance needed, any complaints of discomfort or pain by the patient, and any observations relevant to his condition during the transfer such as signs of weakness or dizziness.

Jenny should shift Mr. Ivy. The weight of Mr. Ivy should be on right side of Jenny where he is supposed to support himself then from there he can limp on to the table where he will be examined.

2. Jenny help is the body mechanic which Mr. Ivy should have for him to be assisted.

3. Mr. Ivy needs a patient education in order to clarify his sickness so as to know what he is being treated.

4. Jenny should have clear documents which shows the state of illness of Mr. Ivy including temperature and pressure such that the next nurse who will handle the situation will have a clear information on what to do with the patient.
