Does the president need a large margin of victory to lead effectively?

A president doesn't need a large margin of victory to lead well. Often with contentious elections, a president can still form an effective coalition, especially if his or her party is in power in the house and senate. While the people may be split, a majority of the legislation can be promoted and passed leading to an effective presidency.
