In Schenck v. U.S. (1919), the Supreme Court maintained the Espionage Act which constrained freedom of speech and media during World War I. They governed that Congress had a right to restrict speech "of such a nature as to make a clear and present danger that will carry about the practical evils that Congress has a right to prevent."
