The items here are the following:

a 3.4 lb sleeping mat

a 4.6 lb camping bag

a 2.2 lb water bottle

The expression is 3.4x + 4.6x + 2.2x

8.0 + 2.2 = 10.2 x

The 10.2 pounds is the weight for each hiker. Meaning, this is the weight carried by each x hikers.
