It was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams and his supporters for religious freedom it took place after the conflict with masacusets Bay. Roger williams was dumped into that place and many critics often describe the place as 'Rogue Island' due to their alliance to king George.

The colony was allowed a great amount of freedom in their governing, but they must follow the guidelines that written by king charles II who granted the Charter of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in 1663.
