Suppose that 12 inches of wire costs 48 cents. At the same rate, how many inches of wire can be bought for 24 cents?

Use the equation of two ratios to solve this:

12 in x
------------ = ----------- Cross multiplying, 48x = 12(24) x=6 inches
48 cents 24 in
