A car with a leftward velocity is moving to the left. However, if the acceleration persists, the velocity will reach zero and possibly move in the opposite direction.

A car with leftward velocity and rightward acceleration is slowing down.
If the rightward acceleration lasts long enough, the leftward velocity will shrink to zero and the velocity will eventually become rightward.
