We have similar triangles allowing us to form the proportion
x/(x+9) = 4/10

which is basically the ratios of the corresponding sides

Solve for x
x/(x+9) = 4/10
x*10 = 4*(x+9)
10x = 4x+36
10x-4x = 4x+36-4x
6x = 36
6x/6 = 36/6
x = 6

Answer: 6
