Why does the democratic-republican society insist on the centrality of "free communication of opinions" in preserving american liberty?

Freedom of thought and freedom of communication was what the democratic Republican Society stood on.

The society sees excessive power as a hindrance to liberty; people are not able to express their thoughts freely. In line with this, the Democratic-Republican Society preached what freedom of Speech meant for them. If people are not able to express their thoughts freely then this means that they are being hindered liberty.
