What structural features do ethanol and 1-decanol have in common?

Both ethanol and 1-decanol have an empty site (an atom with a lone pair of electrons).
This site can be used by the water to form a hydrogen bond.

Therefore, the common feature between the two is that they are both capable of hydrogen bonding with water.
