People have an optimal level of tension. This is the level at which a person's performance will be at their best. Any more or less tension will decrease performance at a marginal rate. If a person has too little arousal, the person might seek out an activity that they enjoy, and if the level is too high, they may look for a relaxing activity to settle themselves.
