Enslaving a large amount of Africans was extremely profitable to the owner because productivity would sky rocket without actually having to pay the person for their work, or treat them fairly at all.

Plantation owners used slaves because they needed more labourers to maximise their profit. Slavery is much cheaper than having paid labourers.
