first multiply -1 by everything in the parenthesis, so it would be
8 - x - 3 = 11
combine like terms (8 and -3)
5 - x = 11
subtract 5 from both sides
-x = 11-5
-x = 6
divide both sides by -1 and you get
x = -6

If you're subtracting to add, you must subtract a negative number to be able to solve for x. So 8-(-6+3)=11. x= -6.
