After the War of 1812, the U.S. took its place on the world's stage. While tension with the British continued, U.S. and British warships in the Great Lakes region were reduced with the signing of the Rush-Bagot Agreement. The U.S. also negotiated an extension of the northern U.S. border. In 1823, President James Monroe set a nationalistic policy with his speech which introduced the Monroe Doctrine. You will learn more about this in the next tutorial. Basically, the U.S. wanted to stay neutral in the conflict of European nations, while staking a new control in the western hemisphere. Was this useful???
