The role that the Free-Soil Partyplayed in the election of 1848was that it won 10% of the vote by utilizing it's antislavery platform. Although the Free-Soil Party's candidate, Martin Van Buren, did not carry any states, he collected enough votes to cause Lewis Cass, the Democratic candidate, to lose

A faction of New York Democrats known as the Barn burners objected to slavery in the territories and opposed the 1848 Democratic nominee, Lewis Cass. The Barn burners and other anti-slavery Democrats joined with some anti-slavery Whigs and the Liberty Party to form the Free Soil Party.
