Hi there!

The Distributive Property allows us to multiply the term outside of the parenthesis by all terms inside of the parenthesis.

Here’s an example;
2(1 + 3)
2(1) + 2(3)
2 + 6
8.

Hopefully this example and explanation has helped you understand the concept of using the Distributive Property.

Now, let’s apply this to our current expression.

-8(5v - x - 5)

Remember that when you multiply a negative by a positive, the product remains negative. When you multiply a negative by a negative, the product is positive.

-8(5v - x - 5)
-8(5v) = -40v
-8(-x) = 8x
-8(-5) = 40

Our product is:
-40v + 8x + 40

I hope this helps!

-8(5v - x - 5) =
-40v + 8x + 40 <==

** u r basically multiplying that -8 by every term in the parenthesis...
(-8 * 5v) + (-8 * -x) + (-8 * -5) =
-40v + 8x + 40
