These historical events were known as "The Greco Persian Wars" or simply "The Persian Wars", occurred around 499 to 449 BC.
The Persians were defeated by Athenian forces at "The Battle of Marathon"; and Marathon being a town in Greece (the name means "full of fennels") and from the battle, the marathon running race originated.
The Persian army moved toward the south of Attica under Datis and Artaphernes command; and Athenians came from the hills and crushed them.
The Greeks won a decisive victory, marking a turning point in the conflict.
