In "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar", by William Shakespeare, in Act III, Scene II, what Brutus says is "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more." After the murder of Caesar, Brutus anticipates the answer to a question that has not yet been asked. He killed Caesar because he was ambitious and he would have been very dangerous for Rome.
