a charter of liberties to which the English barons forced King John to give his assent in June 1215 at Runnymede. a document constituting a fundamental guarantee of rights and privileges.

The Magna Carta basically said that everyone is subject to the law, even the king, and that everyone is guaranteed the right to justice and a fair trial. It also guarantees their basic human rights.
