Fertilization in that case would make a tetraploid zygote.
To maintain the diploid 2n number for the species, that zygote would then have to undergo a reduction division that evicted half the chromosomes in an organized manner. I don't know if that helps or not, i found that on a good website to be honest i couldn't find a clear answer.
