Which of the following has a graph that is a straight line?

Equation 1: y = 5x2 + 41
Equation 2: y = 14x5 − 4
Equation 3: y = 12x + 17
Equation 4: y4 = 2x − 1

Which of the following ordered pairs could be placed in the table and still have the relation qualify as a linear function?

Input
(x) Output
(y)
1 12
3 9
5 6
? ?
(7, 3)
(7, 10)

It's important that you use the " ^ " symbol to denote exponentiation:

Equation 1: y = 5x^2 + 41
Equation 2: y = 14x^5 − 4
Equation 3: y = 12x + 17
Equation 4: y^4 = 2x − 1

If either x or y has an exponent other than 1, the equation cannot be that of a straight line.

Please, could y ou post your other question separately, and make a neater table of your data? Thanks.

Answer:

y^4 = 2x − 1, answer D.

(I hope this is correct.)

Edited:

That is not the correct answer. Try y = 12x + 17, B.
