Convert this to improper fractions (14-1/2 sq yds = 169/12 sq yds) and (4-1/3 sq yds = 13/3 sq yds) divide 169/12 by 13/3 and you get 507/156 sq yds which is equal to 3-1/4 sq yds.

Answer:

width = 3 1/4 yards

Step-by-step explanation:

The area of a rectangle is given by the formula: area = (length*width). given the area and the length, we can rearrange the formula: (area/length) = width, then, remplacing the values we got:
14(1)/(2) square yards / 4(1)/(3) yards = width, then, we rearrange the fraction as follows:
14(1)/(2)square yards= ((14*12)+1)/(2)=(169)/(12)square yards ; and
4(1)/(3) yards= ((4*3)+1)/(3)=(13)/(3) yards, then
((169)/(12) )/((13)/(3) ) yards= (169*3)/(12*13)yards = (507)/(156)yards, and finally we simplify
((507)/(13) )/((153)/(13) ) =((39)/(3) )/((12)/(3) ) yards=3(1)/(4)yards
