What impact did the change from hunter-gatherer societies to sedentary agricultural societies have on gender roles?

During the Neolithic Revolution society changed and people stayed in one place rather than roaming and searching/hunting for food. Prior to the revolution roles had been equal, the men hunted and the women gathered for food. With the onset of agriculture men began to work outside as women took to the indoors doing less strenuous tasks/child rearing which gradually made women appear less important than men in society.
