The majority of damage caused by volcanoes is caused by earthquake, toxic gas and its volcanic ash. Indeed technically lava would be the most destructive, but it rarely came in big volume and usually only cover the small area near the volcanoes.
The volcanic earthquake, ash and the gas on the other hand, could cause damage even to towns that exist miles apart from the volcanoes.
