One way of doing this is to subtract 0.12 from 1.00 and multiplying the original price of the car by the resulting fraction:

Another (longer than need be) would be to calculate the discount on $9775 first and then subtract your result from $9775:
0.12($9775) = $1173; subtracting $1173 from $9775 results in the discounted price $8602 (same as before).
