Stone applies a discount of 12% to the price of a car. Write two expressions that represent the marked-down price. Then find the discounted price for an original price of $9,775.

One way of doing this is to subtract 0.12 from 1.00 and multiplying the original price of the car by the resulting fraction:

(1.00-0.12)$9775 = 0.88(9775) = $8602 (the discounted price)

Another (longer than need be) would be to calculate the discount on $9775 first and then subtract your result from $9775:

0.12($9775) = $1173; subtracting $1173 from $9775 results in the discounted price $8602 (same as before).
