I would say the correct answer is A. they provide supporting details.
These sentences are introduced into the paragraph to give more information about the cottage - its color, what can be found around it, the patio in front of it. So they don't introduce the main idea, or show cause and effect, or set up a comparison but rather just add more details to the picture.
