Which musical device implies starting a note with emphasis and diminishing it toward the end?

Accents are usually what are placed above lyrics and/or chords. They usually look like this; < or >. When an accent is facing this way (>) it means to start out with emphasis and diminishes towards the end. If the accent if facing this way (<) it means to start out soft then gradually increase the emphasis.
