What role did race play in the fundamentalist orientation of conservative americans in the 1920s?

It was feared that these new immigrants would bring beliefs and practices that would threaten the way of life of conservative Americans. In addition, voting rights laws and other forms of racist legislation made clear that minority races and cultures would not be able to wield as much power at the ballot box as native-born white Americans, especially in the Southern states.
