simplify the left side. 0.02x+(40-0.1x)=0.42x
-0.08x+40=0.42
since 0.42x contains the variable to solve for, move it to the left side of the equation by subtracting 0.42x from both sides
-0.08x+40-.0.42x=0
-0.5x=-40
x=80
