Answer:

Steinbeck´s story takes place in Salinas Valley, what is nowadays one of the most fertile lands in all of California. Salinas Valley is located just south of San Francisco. More in particular, the story mostly takes place in the ranch of Elisa´s husband, Henry, where they grow flowers and where we are introduced to the chrysanthemums that will be so symbolically important for the story.
