Joelle would like to tip her hairdresser 20%. If her haircut was $38.00, which expression should she use to find the tip amount?

Answer:

The expression would be: $38 x .2 or $38 x .20

or $38 x .20 = $7.60

All of those expressions mean the same thing.

Explanation:

First: You always need to convert the percentage to a decimal or fraction... whichever you are more comfortable with. If using a calculater, then convert to a decinal.

To convert the 20% to a decimal. Percents are out of 100 so it would be 20/100 or .20 or .2 (all three of those values are equivalent - or the same)

Second: You multiply $38 * .20 = $7.60 <= that is the tip she would give

*If they ask what the total paid is, then you would simply add the original $38 to the $7.60 tip to get $45.60 total paid.
