A white elephant could represent unrequited love; a person giving their all to their loved one, but not receiving anything thought in return. Additionally, it could represent it's literal meaning: possibly renovating a house or property of some sort, but doing so at an economic or social loss.

If the phrase white elephant means "a property requiring much care and expense but yielding little profit, what might a white elephant symbolize in this story?
