How can the presence of seven continents on the earth's surface be explained?

The seven continents were originally one large continent, called a supercontinent, and with the help of plate tectonics, have shifted into their present-day states. Ice ages have changed the continents as well, since the sea level was much lower prior to it. The rising water level covered a fair amount of land.
