In the lines from the 1863 speech The Gettysburg Address, American President Abraham Lincoln intends to dedicate a cemetery at Gettysburg in order to honor those who perished in the Civil War. Thus, he assigns a portion of that field as a resting place for those who gave their lives for their country.
