The city of Berlin, Germany was divided after World War II. The western side of the city was democratic, but the eastern side of the city was part of the Soviet zone. On August 13, 1961, East German soldiers began construction of a wall. They began by putting down barbed wire and bricks to divide the Democratic West from the Soviet-controlled East.
