Given the expression;

3n - 10 = 5

We are to find the value of n from the expression

Step 1: Add the additive inverse of -10 to both sides. Note that the additive inverse of -10 is 10.

Adding 10 to both sides will give;

3n - 10 + 10 = 5 + 10

3n + 0 = 15

3n = 15

Step 2: Divide both sides by 3

3n = 15

3n/3 = 15/3

n = 5

Hence the value of n is 5

To check:

We will substitute n = 5 into the left hand side of the equation to see if we are going to arrive at the value on the right.

3n - 10

if n = 5

= 3(5) - 10

= 15 - 10

= 5 (right hand side)

This shows that the solution n = 5 is correct
