Why wasn't phillip frightened at the beginning of the book even though there is threat of war for the island?

Phillip's initial lack of fear of the war reflects his immaturity and lack of understanding of what war truly is. When the nearby island of Aruba is attacked, he is initially swept up in the excitement.
