Why is it important to be specific when offering criticism?

Being specific in more constructive which is more helpful to others. People can learn from constructive criticism.

Examples:

non-constructive vague criticism: The paper you wrote needs improvement.

Better, more specific criticism: The paper you wrote could be improved by adding more details to the main characters.
