Although its been perceived that the US economy slid by the 1970's, what really happened was that the rest of the world caught up. Most women returned to their traditional roles as homemakers and mothers, and only a relatively small percentage were able to attend college and build careers. In 1963, however, Betty Friedan published a book called The Feminine Mystique. It had such an impact on society that five million copies sold by 1970, helping to found the modern feminist movement.
