How did john locke's natural law argument apply to the social contract theory?

Locke felt that humans, in their natural state, were superior to the social strictures set forth by divine law, whereby some people were simply "destined" to be rulers and others were relegated to being ruled over. With "natural law," people gave up a small amount of their freedom as a way of making sure society ran in an orderly fashion.
