Irrational means that it cannot be expressed as a whole number, fraction, or decimal.

-7/4 is a fraction
2/3 is a fraction
square root of 4 is plus or minus 2, whole numbers

But, square root of three can't possibly be expressed as a solid number.

Hope this helps!
