5x + 3y = 1
x + 2y = 10
Isolate x in the second equation:
x = 10 - 2y
Subtitute this value for x in the first equation:
5(10 - 2y) + 3y = 1
Distribute the 5:
50 - 10y + 3y = 1
Add like terms
50 - 7y = 1
Isolate y:
-7y = -49
divide by -7
y = 7
Now we know the value of y, let's plug it in the second equation
x + 2(7) = 10
x + 14 = 10
x = 10 - 14
x = -4

y = 7, x = -4
