The answer is C, because even though Douglass doesn't give a direct explaining of his feeling, he uses a powerful simile instead.

The correct answer is
C. "Like one who had escaped a den of hungry lions."
He described his feelings towards it as if he was surrounded by hungry lions who always wanted to get him and he had to fight and struggle to survive and now that he has escaped and has become a free man he finally understands how difficult the period was.
