What do Ember’s citizens believe about the rest of the world?

So, due to the lack of answers if there were any... I would like to say that the book was great and the Citizens of Ember city thought the world of was trashed and destroyed due to human consumption or possibly an other wordily event that occurred that would have destroyed the surface.

They believe Ember is the only light in the dark world, and that the builders will command to save them.
