Answer:

B) Douglass suffers mental torture as well as physical violence.

Step-by-step explanation:

In his autobiographical book "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave", Douglass recounts his life as a slave. He details his childhood and even adult life living as a slave under various masters and how he eventually became a free man. His accounts of his slavery days also led him to be one of the foremost abolitionist for the slavery system.

Frederick Douglass had been living as a slave in the household of a man named Master Thomas Auld for sometime. Mr. Thomas was, according to Douglass, a man who believes in hurting his slaves as the only way of maintaining them. Douglass and his master couldn't see eye to eye so Thomas sent him to live with Mr. Covey for a year. Mr. Covey is famous for being a "slave-breaker", for his torturous ways. His reputation of breaking young slaves made him the famous among slave holders. His ways also ensured minimum expense for the work done. Added to that, he being a professor of religion also gave him enough credibility to the other slave owners to send their slaves to be "trained" by him. Under him, Douglass suffered mental torture as well as physical torture. He even mentions in Chapter X that "scarce a week passed without him whipping me".
