2 - 0.5n= 3n+16
----------------------- subtract 2 from both sides
-2 -2
-0.5n = 3n+14
----------------------- then subtract -3n from both sides as well
-3n -3n
-3.5n = 14
--------------- divide -3.5 on each side
-3.5 -3.5
simplify
Answer: n= -4
