Two poles, A and B, are 12 meters apart. Pole A is 5 meters high. A rope 20 meters long is tied to the top of pole A and stretches to the top of pole B. What is the height of pole B? Assume that pole B is taller than pole A.

Answer: The height of the pole will be 21 m.

Explanation:

Since we have given that

Length of pole A = 5 meters

Distance between Pole A and Pole B = 12 m

Length of rope is tied to the top of pole A and stretches to the top of pole B = 20 meters

As shown in the figure below , we can apply "Pythagorus theorem" to find the height of the topper part of triangle :

H^2=B^2+P^2\\\\20^2=12^2+B^2\\\\400=144+B^2\\\\400-144=B^2\\\\256=B^2\\\\√(256)=B\\\\16=B

So, Length of pole B will be

16+5=21\ m

Hence, the height of the pole will be 21 m.

Two poles, A and B, are 12 meters apart. Pole A is 5 meters high. A rope 20 meters-example-1
