Chinese civilizations, just like many other ancient civilizations, settled in river valleys. There are several reasons for this. However, the main reason is the fact that river valleys are extremely fertile areas. The fact that soil around these areas is particularly fertile means that it is able to support a large population. Therefore, this allowed for the expansion of Chinese civilization, and allowed it to develop increasingly complex social arrangements.
