c=carol
t=tom
carol sold 1/4 of tom
c=1/4t
c=t/4
together they sold 35
c+t=35
subsitute t/4 for c
t/4+t=35
multiply both sides by 4
t+4t=140
5t=140
divide both sides by 5
t=28
sub back
c=t/4
c=28/4
c=7
carol sold 7
tom sold 28
