Greetings!

"Solve:
2y = x + 2 and
x - 3y = -5?"...

Solve using substitution:

2y=x+2

y=(x+2)/2
----------------------------

x -3y = -5
is also

x - 3((x+2)/2) = -5
Solve for x.

x - 3((x+2)*1/2) = -5
Distribute the parenthesis.

x - 3(x*1/2+2*1/2) = -5
Simplify.

x - 3(1/2x+1) = -5
Distribute the parenthesis.

x - (3*1/2x+3*1)= -5
Simplify

x - (3/2x+3)= -5
Add -3 to both sides.

(x - (3/2x+3))+(-3)=(-5)+(-3)
Simplify.

x - (3/2x)=-2
Find LCM.

2/2x-(3/2x)=-2

-1/2x=-2
Multiply both sides by -2.

(-1/2x)*(-2)=(-2)*(-2)
Simplify.

x=4

Now Input this constant in place of the variable x.

2y = x + 2

2y = 4+2
Add like terms.

2y = 6
Divide both sides by 2.

(2y)/2 = (6)/2
Simplify.

y=3

x=4 y=3

Hope this helps.
